Viana do Castelo: the Minho's principal beach resort

Viana do Castelo is the best known and most appealing of the seaside towns along the Minho coast. It lies at the mouth of the River Lima with the main town on the north side dominated by Monte de Santa Luzia and its basilica. On the southern side across the recently restored Eiffel bridge lie the dockyard (believed to be the only one in Portugal where there is active ship-building) and then further around the excellent Cabedelo and Amorosa beaches.

The beaches run almost unbroken from Viana south to Esposende and north to Vila Praia de Ancora, with fine examples at Areosa, Carreco and Afife, all just a few km north of the town.

Rather more agreeably, the busy fishing harbour ensures a fresh and abundant catch and there are plenty of restaurants to help you enjoy.

There are notable old buildings, including in the centre the Misericordia (almshouse) built in 1598, Sao Domingos church and Barbosa Maciel Palace, which houses the local museum. To the north west Nossa Senhora da Agonia chapel is the focus of a famous, colourful festival every August.

In olden times Viana was a major seaport. Explorers like Joao Velho (Congo) and Joao Alvares Fagundes (Newfoundland) sailed from here. It was also the main northern wine export centre before this moved down to Porto.

From Viana you can explore the picturesque Lima valley and picture-postcard towns like Ponte de Lima and Ponte da Barca, all steeped in Portugal's national history.

Viana do Castelo is easily reached by road or rail from Porto and we offer a good selection of accommodation in small towns and villages around:

to the north east at Outeiro Bouca (rural villa for 4 with pool)

to the east at Santa Marta Sao Joao (manor house for 10 with pool)

and to the south at Anha Augustinho (villa for 4 with pool) and near Barroselas Matos (villa for 6 with pool) and next door Madalena (cottage for 2), available together or separately.
